Starting with small niches may be a way of learning the trade, but a possible problem is lack of traffic and profit. The key is make sure the niche has competition and thereby is profitable and to then develop a product or service that niche needs that is your own. A problem many affiliate marketers face is differentiation. It may be great developing a micro niche, but why do it if there’s a niche with millions of potential customers where you can carve out your own piece to dominate.

Great information! I first started out trying to make money with the “bum marketing” approach. I did make a few hundred dollars quickly, but found that marketing in very competitive niches worked better for me. In fact, I now make more money in the “make money at home” niche than any tiny micro niche I tried! Great blog, super information – thanks.

I think when you are new it helps to start with a small niche just to learn and start seeing some results before tackling a really competitive niche.

Interesting post.

I am just starting out on the road of affiliate marketing and I am going for the smaller niches and even now a few of the atomic or micro niches. Like you say, the problem I am facing now my sites are starting to get ranked well in Google is the lack of volume. Even on a 12,000 search nice being at the top of page one in Google only gets you about 20 hits per day.

I do have a weight loss domain I have yet to get started with so perhaps that can be my first big niche site?
