You’ve done a great job getting the word out about this, Linda. It’s a good thing you pointed to Melanie Seery’s blog on this matter. If there’s any advice for affiliates in those states affected to listen to, it’s hers. These bills go a little further to include independent agents (like sales representatives, commissioned or otherwise.) Any ideas on cooperating with Sales and Marketing trade associations to lobby against this type of measure.

It’s also not clear if a “sales and use” license would be required in every stay where you may pick up a customer, or every district that may require such licensing. Looks like they are also trying to wrap up mail-order into this too.

I know the states need money, but there must be a better way rather than burdening a company with 1,200 different taxing jurisdictions where customers may or may not reside.

The Direct Marketing Association has talked with a Senate Committee on the issue, relating it to “taxation without representation.” I’m spreading the word.

agreed, this is a serious problem that will negatively impact nearly all bloggers and ecommerce sites. in addition to supporting industry groups against the “Amazon Tax”, bloggers need to alert others, and contact their senator and congressperson to fight this.

I have to come out and say it: this is a rather frightening and disturbing change that’s taking place. I hope that, as an industry, we’re able to start making some positive headway soon.
