What’s better; strict dedication (i.e. 40 hours per week) to a relative number of affiliate programs or joining multiple programs and dedicating a few hours to each throughout a week?

I think it’s better to dedicate yourself to creating a site with longevity on a topic that you can THEN monetize with affiliate products, as well as CPM ads, contextual advertising. The whole package. I’ve laid out my affiliate business plan and it’s all about building an affiliate brand and then monetizing the hell out of it. Dedicating yourself to one affiliate program could leave you sitting on your hands if they ever shut down their affiliate program or go out of business. I’ve been through it and it’s not fun to have a site with topic rankings that you suddenly have no way to make money from.
