FTC Warns of Upcoming Regulation for Online Advertising
Affiliate marketers often talk about how we need to clean up the industry and self regulate before the government does it for us. Well there is talk of impending government intervention in the area of consumer privacy and behavioral targeting. Clickz and MediaPost have the story.
FTC Warns of Impending Government Regulation of Web Ad Industry
“As the Federal Trade Commission, Federal legislators and state agencies heighten interest in how marketers use consumer data, it’s clear the industry is running out of time to establish a self-policing regime.
“We sounded the clear call for self-regulators,” said Eileen Harrington, Deputy Director of the Bureau of Consumer Protection for the FTC. That clear call was a set of self-regulatory guidelines put forth by the FTC late last year.”

Heeeerrrrreeeee it comes. This is what happens when we do not take the time to do the right thing and take care of our industry and most of all the user/consumer.
btw one of our mobile advertisers has said that their verticle is being destroyed due to email and mobile spammers such as Scott R (you know who) who are making a ton of money and just killing the consumer and soon cpa marketing due to greed…… hmmmm just like the financial institutions!
We as an industry have got to, got to get our act together and self police before we have a major contraction. Or perhaps that would be good because it will clean out the clutter. Lets look at whats going on in the financial industry and learn from it.
