Just got a long email from Linda Woods at PartnerCentric that contained an article about the fact that efforts to repeal the Amazon Tax have been started, but is not final and the outcome is uncertain.

UPDATE 8/1: NY Amazon Tax REPEAL UNLIKELY per New York Times

UPDATE 7/18: New Tax Repeal - What NY Affiliates Can Do Now

7/18 3:15 Got reprint rights for the full article here: New York Senate Votes to Repeal Amazon Tax - Full Text

This isn’t on the public wires anywhere yet, thanks Linda for getting me this so we could scoop the story. I believe this article came from the July 11th NRF (National Retail Federation) newsletter, however to click through and read the full story you have to be a member which costs several hundred $. I’m only quoting part of it and as soon as I find a public source that has the rest of the info, I’ll link to it so you can read the full article. (I tried calling the PR person listed in the release to get reprint permission but she’s on vacation til Thursday.)

“The New York state Senate has voted to repeal the controversial “Amazon Tax” that went into effect last month requiring out-of-state Internet merchants with affiliate sellers in the state to collect sales tax. But it is unclear whether the repeal measure will be approved by the state Assembly…

Senators voted 44-18 to approve S.B. 8638 on June 24, the day after the measure was introduced by the Senate Rules Committee. The bill would immediately repeal the month-old tax…

The repeal legislation has passed the Senate and has been assigned to the House Ways and Means Committee, but prospects for further action are uncertain because the bill has yet to find a Democratic sponsor in the Assembly.”

That’s just a small part of it. The doc also does refer to the impact on affiliate marketing companies and the fact that some merchants have severed ties with affiliates to avoid having to pay the tax.

If anyone out there can find any more info or if someone with a political bent has advice for people about putting pressure on the right arm of the NY government to help push this repeal through - please post in comments to let others know.
