I’ve definitely experienced the success of using social websites to increase search engine exposure. (I don’t say ranking b/c technically, your site isn’t ranking, however, you are gaining more exposure from the social site’s increased ranking.)

Not just with the sites you’ve listed above; there are many more social sites that haven’t been fully utilized — or exploited.

Also, Xanga should be spelled with an X, not Z. It’s ridiculous (and borderline spam) how often people are “inviting” me to join Xanga — I believe it’s because they use the “invite friends in your address book” feature when they sign up for an account.

All that said, great caveats, Linda. If you’re too conspicuous with these services, you may find your page, blog, or account deleted because you’ve been reported for spam.

Another thing to note about the above is that it’s seasonal and not a long term thing. If you go this route, you’d better make sure you also have a great back up plan that will continue to earn you revenue in the off-peak seasons.
