The Current State of our Marketing Cookies
Stop Eating Our Cookies!
Have not posted anything recently about the ever-evolving online landscape as it pertains to consumer’s views about cookies and their deletion patterns. There have been a couple recent studies and white papers on the issue. Privacy, security concerns and wanting to free up computer space are some of the main reasons consumers delete cookies. However there is still lots of consumer confusion about cookies.
According to a recent article by eMarketer titled: Cookies Confuse Some Consumers “The most popular opinion about cookies? They “both improved and detracted” from users’ Internet experience.” They show several graphs citing stats from a July study done by InsightExpress.
comScore also recently published a white paper on the Impact of Cookie Deletion on the Accuracy of Website Audience Measurement . “In the study they monitored first-party cookies from Yahoo! and third-party cookies from DoubleClick, and surveyed US Internet users.” The white paper examines issues such as:
“Comparison of first-party vs. third-party cookie deletion rates and the resulting overstatement in servers’ estimates of the size of site audiences and the reach of online advertising campaigns. and Examination of consumers’ awareness of, and attitudes towards, cookies.”
